No One Ever Thought Anything Would Go Wrong

Nobody thought anything would go awry.
It was just another country show, same as last year, full of pies and proper wellies.
Just another event in the local fairground.
Until a boy made his move.
At first, it looked like a clumsy bit of mischief.
And then, it really didnt.
He strode right into the centre of the ring.
On his own.
Oi! Whats that lad up to?!
A ripple of worry fluttered through the crowd.
He tripped, scrambled up again
didnt spare a glance backwards.
Because the bull had clocked him already.
Stock still. Dead focused.
Even the breeze seemed to pause.
The boy moved in closer.
Far, far too close.
Get him out of there now!
But everyone just gawped, frozen.
Because somehow, it didnt smell of danger
more like something entirely different.
Please look at me, the boy said, barely above a whisper.
The bull shifted his hooves.
Plodded forward, slow and determined,
each step thumping with gravity.
The boy didnt so much as blink.
He fished around in his pocket,
came out with a tattered handkerchief.
My dad said youd recognise this
A hush blanketed the field.
A few of the old hands traded glancestheyd definitely seen it before.
He loved you more than anything.
The bull stood, right up close, snorting softly.
Someone called out from the sidelines
Charlie, get back here!
But young Charlie wasnt going anywhere.
If you remember him
He gulped,
please dont leave me too.
And then
the bull edged even closerThe bull lowered his heavy head, nosing the faded cloth. For a breathless moment, boy and animal simply stoodtwo shadows outlined in golden dust. Then, astonishingly gently, the bull pressed its forehead against Charlies, rumbling deep in its chest, a sound like a promise. The crowds fear melted into awe.

A tear slipped down Charlies cheek. Somehow, he understood: he didnt need to be alone, not really, not with memories tethered this strong. The bull stepped aside and waited, as if inviting him, as if saying, Come with me.

Charlie grinned through his tears, clutching the handkerchief, and led the bull toward the gate, side by side, to a thunder of applause and not a few damp eyes. In that ring of trampled straw, everyone realizedsome ties, once forged, never truly break.
