Seeing the dog sprawled beside the park bench, he sprinted toward it, his eyes also catching the leash that Natalie had carelessly left behind.

Emily spotted the dog lying on the park bench and rushed over. She also saw the loose leash that Sarah had carelessly tossed aside. Buddy, the dog, glanced mournfully at his owner with halfclosed eyes

Emily and her brother James had barely spoken for almost two years. She still could not understand how a trivial quarrel had spiralled into such a fierce feud.

Emily and James Whitaker were born a year apart. From childhood they had been inseparable, always defending each other. No matter what mischief they got into, they shared the blame equally and never let the other take the fall.

Their hometown, Ashford, grew steadily year after year. Their luck improved when the village council was led by Peter Marshall, a native of Ashford who had become a respected economist.

After graduating with a degree in agriculture, Peter returned home and threw himself into community projects. His efforts were soon recognised, and a decade later he became the head of Ashfords local government.

Their private lives blossomed as well. Emily, after finishing nursing college, took a job at the village health centre as a junior nurse. Peter couldnt ignore such a bright young woman. Emily returned his interest, they married, and the whole village celebrated their wedding. James was genuinely happy for his sister, even though his own marriage to Sarah was far from blissful.

While Emily was still a newlywed, Sarah would sometimes mutter about her, calling her useless or pretentious. After the marriage, jealousy replaced the criticism. Sarah began demanding more from her husband a bigger house, a newer car, a better wardrobe

James often complained, Everyone else seems to have it all, and weve got nothing! He tried his best, but he could never meet Sarahs endless wishes, no matter how much money or effort he put in.

Sarah herself was unhappy too; she never experienced the joy of motherhood. Meanwhile Emilys life was thriving she married, gave birth to a son and then a daughter, built a spacious home, and her husband earned a respectable rank

Family gatherings grew increasingly tense. Whenever James visited Emilys house, Sarah would immediately start berating her husband.

The final clash happened on Jamess birthday. Emily brought a Labrador puppy from the city she had long wanted such a dog. Peter gifted James a new motorbike.

Everything seemed fine until drunken Sarah lost control of her temper and unleashed her bottledup venom on Emily:

Come on, Em! The dogis that some sort of joke? If we cant have children, lets at least get a dog, right?

Emily tried to calm her:

Sarah, settle down. Youll be sorry later

Her words fell on deaf ears. A huge argument erupted, the guests split into two camps. Peter whispered to his wife that they should leave, and after saying goodbye they slipped out of the celebration.

Two years passed. That night James began to avoid his sister; their contact was reduced to a few brief, infrequent meetings. Tension also rose between him and Sarah.

In the evenings James walked more often to the riverbank with Buddy. The two appeared happy together: James would toss a stick, Buddy would chase it, then curl up at his feet and listen to Jamess quiet stories.

Neighbours knew about this but did nothing James remained stubborn.

After the bitter dispute, Sarahs hatred for Emily grew, and it extended to Buddy as well. When James was away, Sarah would chase the dog out of the house, scold it, even strike it on occasion.

The nosy neighbours added fuel to the fire:

Did you hear, Sarah? Your husbands out by the river again with the dog

Yesterday he ran into Emily with the kids they were laughing together!

Jealousy completely consumed Sarah. One day James asked:

Sarah, arent you hurting Buddy?

Do I need your dog? she snapped, storming out of the room.

Buddy began to hide from Sarah, trembling whenever she appeared.

Everything came to a head when, one morning, James, furious, snapped:

Ive had enough of this endless jealousy!

Left alone and boiling with rage, Sarah dragged Buddy to the garden, tied him to a bench and began to beat him. The poor dog whimpered in pain. When she finally exhausted her fury, she tossed the leash aside, packed a bag and left home for good.

That evening James returned, only to find the garden in disarray. He saw Buddy lying on the bench, a bruised paw clutched in his hand. He rushed him inside, cradling the animal.

Emily was just about to leave the clinic when she saw her brother, bloodstained and trembling:

Emily, help me James begged hoarsely.

They carried Buddy to the treatment room. Emily examined the dog carefully:

Who did this?

Sarah James lowered his gaze.

Emily nodded silently, stitched the wounds, washed the cuts and gave Buddy water.

Later, in the hallway, James whispered apologetically:

Forgive me, Em

Dont be ridiculous, Emily smiled wearily. And about Sarah?

No, Em. Thats over.

Emily called Peter:

Peter, could you come quickly, please?

Hearing his wifes exhausted voice, Peter was already on his way.

Half an hour later he arrived, seeing the siblings huddled together, Buddy whimpering softly, his eyes brightening as he sensed they were safe.

Come on, you heroes, he said, patting James on the shoulder.

They took James home, giving him advice on caring for Buddy.

When Emily told their mother what had happened, the old woman sighed:

They should have split up ages ago.

She gathered herself and went to her son to help tidy the house.

In the garden, James sat, stroking Buddy. Their mother arrived, petted them both:

Are you both alright?

Alive, James replied.

A pleasant scent of roast meat and fresh vegetables drifted from the kitchen. Buddy nudged Jamess hand, wagging his tail. James smiled, stood up, and felt the weight lift from his shoulders.

Life continued, but the family learned that holding onto envy and anger only destroys those you love. Compassion, honesty, and letting go of grudges are the true foundations of a peaceful home.
